Top 12 Classic Games That Teach

Looking to liven up your centers? Let your students play games!

That’s right, games have educational value. They provide opportunities for students to develop both social and academic skills. Just like working on a project in cooperative groups, interactive games require that students communicate, stay on task, take turns, and rely on higher-level thinking skills.

Games can also be used in the classroom as a behavior incentive. Students are motivated to earn a “Fun Friday” afternoon of game playing by listening and following directions all week. The best benefit is that they are having fun and learning at the same time. Here are twelve classic games and reasons to incorporate them into your curriculum:

Organized from youngest to oldest skill level

1. Candy Land

builds color recognition and counting skills, supports turn-taking and patience

2. Chutes and Ladders

aids in counting, number recognition, and handling disappointment

3. Red Light, Green Light / Simon Says

enhances communication skills such as listening and following directions, bolsters impulse control

4. Twister

boosts gross motor skills and balance, strengthens directionality (right/left) and color identification skills, elevates auditory memory

5. Boggle / Hangman / Scrabble / Upwards

develops and reinforces literacy skills such as ability to learn new words and their definitions, learn word combinations, and spelling.

Customize: You can even offer bonus points to students who use spelling or unit vocabulary words.

6. Clue

advances attention to visual detail, visual discrimination and deductive reasoning

7. Checkers / Chess

relies heavily on analytical skills and strategic calculations, improves critical thinking skills and self-discipline, expands pattern development

8. Jenga / Operation

fosters coordination and manual dexterity

Customize: You can create a study guide game by writing numbers on the blocks. Numbers correspond to study guide questions. A team's turn isn’t over until the player or team answers the question correctly. If they can’t answer the question the other team or player would have the option to steal the block by answering the question correctly. The winner is the player or team that has the most blocks when the tower falls.

9. Yahtzee

provides practice with quick addition skills and visual perception

10. Scattegories

cultivates classification skills and word recall

Customize: Use subject-specific categories to personalize to your curriculum.

11. Monopoly

promotes math skills including money management, requires reading and reasoning, emphasizes social skills

Customize: Econ classes can have students justify their moves based on economic principles for extra credit.

12. Trivial Pursuit

assesses general knowledge, increases quick recall of information

Customize: Create your own trivia or jeopardy questions for a review game. Want to lesson the workload? Have your students create the game questions to challenge the opposing team.

The Essential Teacher

Now a days, parents are so busy that they can’t give time for their children. They are busy in their duty but don’t try to think even about their child’s study, weak areas & regularity in studies. Hey have no time even to recognize the peer mates of their child. Instead they think that, ‘I have given all responsibilities to the teachers in the school as I am paying for it’. So also children do not give much importance to their parent’s words rather they follow their teachers. They copy every work of their teachers. That’s why teacher’s role is very essential now a days.

Teacher’s most important duty is to think about the child’s development in every field. He should plan before every activity for the children , even a class. H e should also take individual importance to the child. He should be completely ego less.

Followings are some essential requirements of the teacher:

1. POSITIVENESS

Teacher must always keep himself in positive atmosphere. He must see everything positively. Every child in front him is a potential one. He thinks every child equal and take all to the positive arena where nothing is impossible.

2. SMILE

It is a very important quality of a teacher. Because of the smiling face of the teacher, children become fearless and speak openly. They love the teacher and his subject.

3. CREATIVITY

A teacher must be a creative one. Creative teacher faces no problem in the class. His work always inspires the children to be more creative. The class room becomes an enjoying one if a teacher plays different roles.

4. NO EGO

The teacher should not possess any ego. The teacher who says I am teaching the children, he is spoiling everything. He should think teaching as a service of God. He has to be a child in the class so that child will enjoy the class. Gap between the teacher and students spoils every step of education.

5. LOVE

Love has the power which can change everything to its right shape. Students remember much when a class goes on with love. Love spreads love. And the whole world will be filled with love.

6. ALL ROUNDER

A teacher must be an all rounder. He should be very well in extracurricular activities besides the subject mastery. Children are very well impressed by the extra activities of the teacher.

7. PATIENCE

Teaching job is not so easy without patience. Teacher who spreads anger on the children is a defeated teacher. An impatient teacher can’t be appreciated by the children.

8. PRAGMATISM

A teacher should be a pragmatist one. He should have pragmatic look in all work and his thinking process. He should generate real life situation for the children. Children learn more things in the practical base rather than theories.

Thus, teacher’s role is very important to train the coming generation of the country. Teacher must feel his importance and duty to play with the children.
